She bore Cortés a son, Martín, and later married one of his soldiers, Juan de Jaramillo, with whom she journeyed to Spain. Her skill as an interpreter proved invaluable to the Spaniards, allowing them to communicate effectively with the various tribes they encountered. They eventually settled near Lake Texcoco in 1248 but were soon expelled by the Tepaneca. The Mexica people first came to Central Mexico in the 12th century. Hernn Corts led a force of some 500 European soldiers into central Mexico, and made a prisoner of the ninth emperor, Montezuma II (reigned 150220), who died in Spanish custody. The Aztecs were different ethnic groups of Central Mexico who formed the basis of an Empire spanning across Mesoamerica between the 14th and 16th centuries. During this period she learned to speak a dialect of the Maya language and is said to have learned Spanish within months after becoming Cortés’s concubine. The Aztec empire was still expanding, and its society still evolving, when its progress was halted in 1519 by the appearance of Spanish explorers. At some point during her childhood her father died, and she became enslaved to Indians of the Tabasco region. She was the daughter of an Aztec cacique (tribal leader), and her native language was Nahuatl, the language spoken by the Aztec. There is relatively little documented information about Marina’s life.
